About

RU-STEPed Up for Success builds on existing Rutgers programs to strengthen critical points in the recruitment and retention of a diverse population of STEM students. RU-STEPed Up for Success will address the following major goals:

The RU-STEPed Up for Success program will meet these goals through a series of programs that focus on key points in the education of STEM majors. The recruitment goals of this program will be addressed through two programs, one focusing on recruitment of female engineering students by expansion of the already successful ‘TARGET’ program for junior high school girls interested in engineering careers. A second program will focus on bringing more under-represented minority students into the sciences by developing a Saturday Scholars program for high school seniors. These students will be recruited from local school districts characterized by large minority populations, historic poverty, and low college attendance. The retention goals of RU-STEPed Up for Success will be addressed through a series of interventions, including a summer bridge program in writing, mathematics, and chemistry for incoming first-year students who are placed into basic skills courses; academic year mentoring programs utilizing trained peer mentors and teaching assistants to continue support as students enter college level courses; and learning communities centered around pre-calculus and general chemistry. Retention of transfer students will be addressed by the creation of two targeted learning communities, one residential and one non-residential, and placement of transfer students into other appropriate support programs. Finally, RU-STEPed Up for Success will help retain students by increasing awareness of career opportunities in engineering and the sciences, especially the life sciences. Students will be exposed to the wide range of job choices through special programming within learning communities, field trips, and workshops that help students explore a variety of career options.
